April: Meet Odin — Special Needs
Odin came into rescue with a host of health challenges.
Odin was quickly diagnosed with Valley Fever, which was affecting his leg and shoulder muscle. He was limping noticeably, had a high VF titer, and may have been in some pain. The first veterinarian recommended amputation of the leg, but our vet team decided instead to see if Odin’s leg problem and overall health could be improved.
Thanks to a dedicated Foster and two excellent vets in Tempe and Tucson, Odin made great progress. By changing his diet and slowly increasing his exercise, Odin was walking within six months – even running without a limp or hop. While still taking medications for Valley Fever, Odin is happy, active, and a joy to his family.
Swimming is an active part of Odin’s recovery and rehabilitation, and he loves to retrieve in the pool. He now swims or goes on walks nearly every day.
A fellow Golden-loving friend who has owned nearly 20 dogs said of Odin, “he is the happiest Golden I’ve ever seen!”
Odin is the perfect example of what extraordinary volunteers, skilled veterinarians, and a devoted foster/adopter can accomplish. Odin’s owner smiles when friends and strangers say THEY want to adopt him. But they’re not giving him up because he is the greatest Golden ever!
