Golden Tales Masthead 4th Quarter 2019

President's Message

Believe it or not we are almost to the end of 2019. I hope all of our members and supporters had a wonderful year with many blessings and sloppy dog kisses. If you’re like me, you’re thinking about putting up the holiday decorations and checking off gift purchases from the shopping list. At my house, the dogs rule the holidays and become even more spoiled with stockings filled with toys and treats and special gifts under the tree so you can be sure my shopping list is long!
One of the things I feel especially thankful for this year is getting to be a part of such a wonderful organization. The more involved I have become, the more I appreciate how much work goes into saving each and every Golden. It truly takes a village and I believe we have some of the best and kindest people on our team that any rescue could hope for! So far this year we rescued over 60 Goldens and we’re not done yet! At the rate we’re going, we will likely have saved 70+ by the end of the year. Some of the Goldens that came to us were lucky. They were mostly healthy and simply looking for a new forever home due to circumstances beyond their control. But many of the Goldens that came to us were not so lucky. It seemed like this was the year of sick dogs and our vet expenses took a big hit to the tune of over $120,000! Of course this includes our “Gold Standard” care that every Golden receives when they come to us but it also includes some major expenses for major issues such as surgeries, MRI’s, medications, etc. How can we afford to pay for these expenses you may ask? Well, it’s YOU! You make the difference when you donate, sign up for a membership, attend one of our fundraising events, buy the calendars, purchase our merchandise, setup that company donation matching at work, etc. We simply cannot do what we do without YOU! So, we THANK YOU!

We know you have a lot of options when it comes to donating your hard earned money and we thank you for the support to date and the support you’ll give us in the coming months and years. Without your support, we won’t be able to rescue 70+ Goldens next year. With that in mind, we ask that you turn your attention to your mailboxes next week. You may receive a holiday card in the mail and/or an email asking you to kindly consider making a donation to our Annual Fundraising Campaign. This year’s “Silent Night, Lonely Night” card and campaign were hand crafted by our wonderful volunteers in hopes that you’ll help us make this holiday season and 2020 a better, brighter year for the Goldens who need us…whether they know it now or not. Remember, your donations are tax deductible (but as always, consult your tax advisor for details).
I’d like to close out this year by thanking another one of our volunteers who works so tirelessly to help us tell our story. Mark Preston has been a faithful volunteer for many years and is the person responsible for all of our graphic design work. The annual calendar? That was Mark! The international dog rescue artwork? That was Mark too! There are so many projects he’s worked on that I could go on forever. Suffice it to say that we would be lost in a maze of bad artwork and poorly designed calendars without him! Thank you Mark for all you do to help us save all the Goldens!

Wishing you a wonderful holiday season and looking forward to a successful 2020 of saving Goldens with YOU!

No More Lonely Nights

It is heartbreaking to think of a Golden Retriever homeless, hungry and frightened at any time of the year, but especially at the holidays.  This is the driving premise behind our 2019 Annual Fundraising Campaign, “Silent Night … Lonely Night.”  A small committee – Mark Preston, Margie Karow, and Bob and Judi Schillaci – developed this theme by reworking the lyrics of Silent Night to tell a story of rescue and reprieve.  Mark’s stunning graphics and design reflect the touching transformation of a desperate Golden who is rescued from his lonely night.

Think of the many Golden Retrievers that RAGofAZ has saved from the streets of Turkey, Mexico, Phoenix, Tucson, and neighborhoods all over Arizona.  Every dollar you donate helps to ensure that these helpless animals receive life-saving medical care, and discover the warmth and safety of a loving “forever” home.

When this beautiful holiday card arrives in your mailbox, will you celebrate the season by giving the gift of rescue?  You may also donate online here.

On behalf of every Golden Retriever we have rescued – and those who do not yet know they will need us – thank you …

… because every Golden deserves to be “re-homed” for the holidays.

  Parvo Alert! Parvo is here...

One of our vet care partners, Animal Care Hospital of Phoenix, would like to remind our readers that they should consult their vets to make sure their dog's DHPP vaccination or equivalent is up to date:

"PLEASE READ: We have seen our first cases of Parvo this fall at the hospital. This is a highly contagious disease that is common in Phoenix during the cooler season.  Canines contract this serious virus through dog-to-dog contact or through contact with infected feces or surfaces, such as a water bowl. Symptoms of Parvo include loss of appetite, diarrhea and vomiting—Parvo can cause death within 48–72 hours after symptoms start.  Most at risk are younger dogs with incomplete vaccination series.  Puppies should be vaccinated every 3 weeks until they are 18 weeks of age with a quality vaccine that has been stored properly.  Adult dogs should receive a vaccination at 1 yr of age, and then every three years thereafter.

To ensure safety for your dog and other dogs, we HIGHLY recommend that you prioritize getting your pet vaccinated if they are not already. Please contact us at 602-955-5757 or schedule a visit online."

Volunteer Spotlight: Mark Preston

This quarter we’re excited to feature Mark Preston as our featured volunteer. Mark has a special gift when it comes to graphic design work and we’re lucky enough to have had  him donate his time and talent to the rescue for the last several years. While Mark does a lot of design work for us, the biggest project of the year is putting together our annual calendar. From start to finish he makes sure every photo, every story, every detail is perfectly placed! Thank you Mark!
